Step Up for Abortion Access

Abortion is under attack.
We are sharing our stories to ask New York to Step Up.

We want to connect with people who lived in the Northeast and had to travel to obtain an abortion after January 2019.

What’s this about?

People are struggling to overcome barriers to getting care

Despite decent abortion laws, many people in and around New York still can’t get abortion care in state.

Some abortion seekers must travel to D.C. or Maryland, or even across the country, to reach care that should be available closer to home.

New York can do more.

Listen to Vanessa Rios, co-director of the volunteer organization New York Abortion Access Fund (NYAAF), on how the government could better help people get the care that they're entitled to under the state's laws (from WNYC).

Prohibitive Costs

Many people have difficulty paying for their abortions.

Some are unable to use their health insurance for the abortion they need.

Funding for abortion care from the NYC City Council cannot be used out-of-state or to fund logistical support like travel.

Limited Providers

It is difficult for some people to find or reach an abortion provider, especially upstate.

Many providers have not expanded their services. They don’t provide care they're allowed to under the law.

Some providers only offer care in narrow circumstances.

Information

Abortion seekers have difficulty finding good information about how to obtain an abortion.

Fake abortion clinics mislead and misinform abortion seekers.

Medical providers need clear guidance on what care they can provide.

Why New York?

New York could expand care for a lot of people, in and out of state

30 million people live within 100 miles of New York City, making it the most densely populated area in the country.

In fact, 38 states have a smaller population than New York City, alone.

That’s a lot of people who deserve to get care near their homes.

It’s time for New York to Step Up!
